Steven Lawrence Newton, 36, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997.

Mr. Newton was a member of Cradock Baptist Church, a shipfitter for Lyon's Shipyard and an avid baseball player.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Newton; a son, Steven Austin Newton; his parents, Richard and Gaynelle Joyce Newton of Portsmouth; a sister, Shirley Beacham and her husband, Gary, of Hampton; and two nieces, Stephanie and Jessica.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by Dr. David R. Denny. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home
