Rosa Haislip-Joyner
Class of 1940


PORTSMOUTH - Rosa Haislip Joyner, 84, died May 26, 2008, in Golden Living Center. She was predeceased by her brother, Jim Haislip and her sister, Lorice L. Williamson. Born Dec. 20, 1923, in Petersburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late James C. and Alease Lamb Haislip.

A 1940 graduate of Cradock High School, she had been a member of Cottage Place United Methodist Church and a member of Cottage Place Council. For 11 years she was president of United Methodist Women. Rosa worked as a secretary and medical assistant for Dr. Frank Clare for 38 years.

Mrs. Joyner is survived by her loving family, including her husband, Elliott Philmore Joyner; her son, James Randolph Joyner of Rocky Mount, N.C.; grandson, James Philmore Joyner of Roanoke Rapids; nephew, Rad C. Williamson; nieces, Peggy Williamson Ellis, Allison L. Williamson, Lynne Haislip Hill and Leigh Haislip Spencer.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Lynne Hundley and the Rev. Keith Lewis in Cottage Place UMC, 442 Jamestown Ave., Portsmouth. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens will follow. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. After leaving the cemetery, friends are invited to join the family at the home of Peg Ellis, 4204 Foxxglen Run (Miars Plantation) in Chesapeake. Arrangements are under the care of Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennett's Creek Chapel.
