Suffolk - Terry Richard Barkley left this life to be with his Father in heaven April 10, 2007, after a long and courageous fight with cancer. Terry was born July 30, 1954, and passed yesterday at his home in Suffolk.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughter, Amber Marie Shivley of Gates County, North Carolina; stepson, Brad Pittman of Honeydew, Calif.; stepdaughter, Becky Peters and her husband John of Portsmouth; and special friends, Clyde McFarland of Hampton and James Buck of Portsmouth. Others left to cherish his memory include lifelong friends and church family.
Terry was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth and graduated from Cradock High School. He was employed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for more than 30 years. One of his lifetime interests was football. He progressed from the high school field, where he was known as "Sugar Bear", to serving as a football official in the Tidewater area. Terry also enjoyed coaching for various Little League associations. Terry leaves a legacy of wit and humor, but above all a belief and love for his Lord.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at Western Branch Community Church by Pastor Jim Wall and Pastor Lawrence Bates. Immediately following the service the family invites friends to a reception to celebrate Terry’s life by sharing with food, music and memories. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent in Terry’s name to Relay for Life, Team Aloha, Elizabeth River Run, American Cancer Society, Tidewater Area. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.
