John Monroe Shannon, 49, died Jan. 23, 1999, in a local hospital.

Born in Portsmouth, he was a lineman with Virginia Power in Chuckatuck. He attended Temple Baptist Church in Chesapeake, was a member of Masonic Lodge Tidal Wave No. 273 and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam.

Survivors include a daughter, Angela M. Shannon and friend, Rick Hoover, of Virginia Beach; his mother, Elsie Shannon of Chesapeake; two brothers, James A. Shannon of North Carolina and William J. Shannon of Chesapeake; a grandson, Aaron Lee Shannon of Virginia Beach; many nieces and nephews; and his fiancee, April M. Thompson of Carrollton. He was predeceased by his son, John David Shannon and his father, John Shannon.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Allen L. Dooley. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
