William Neal Barnes, 54, died Oct. 31, 2001, in his residence.

A native of Portsmouth, he was a guidance counselor for the Virginia Department of Corrections and a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his father, William Wesley Barnes of Suffolk; a son, William Wesley Barnes II of Tokyo, Japan; a stepmother, Dorothy T. Barnes of Suffolk; two brothers, Dr. Donald Wesley Barnes of Greenville, N.C., and Stephen Wayne Barnes of Newport News.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends at 4685 Schooner Blvd., Suffolk. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements.
