PORTSMOUTH - James Edmond “Jimbo” Carney Jr., 64, was called home to
be with the Lord after a long and courageous battle with leukemia
March 19, 2005, in Maryview Medical Center. He retired from Norfolk
Naval Shipyard and Public Works at the naval base. He was a member
of Iron Workers Union Local 79. He was a coach for Olive Branch
Football for more than 10 years and played for Portsmouth Men’s AAA
softball.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Hazel Carney; four
daughters, Teresa Gray, Lisa Clements and husband Daryl, Linda
Carney and Sherrie O’Conner; a son, Shawn Bass; two sisters, Shelia
Reynolds and Annette Spencer; four brothers, Bobby Carney, Andy
Carney, Earl Spencer and Allen Spencer; and nine grandchildren,
Brandon Gray, Lindsi Thomas, Cassie Thomas, Brielle O’Connor,
Whitney Carney, Tiffany Chiomo, Raven O’Connor and Hannah and
Christian Clements.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Sturtevant Funeral
Home Chapel by the Rev. T.M. Frye. Burial will be in Greenlawn
Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Sturtevant
Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
