Chesapeake - Donald "Sandy" Sanderlin Carawan, 75, died October 3, 2015. Sandy was born in Portsmouth to the late Daisy Suter and Sanderlin Carawan. In addition to his parents, Sandy was predeceased by his stepfather, Author A. Hughes and brother Lester Carawan. He was a veteran having served in the US Air Force. Sandy was an active member of the Great Bridge Lions Club and Hickory UMC. He is a Past President of both the Hickory Ruritan and Great Bridge Lions Clubs. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 51 years, Doris Riggs Carawan; children, Cynthia Williams and her husband Scott of Chesapeake and Ronald Carawan and his wife Denise of Denver, CO; brother, George "Buddy" Carawan and his wife Mary of Kitty Hawk; 6 grandchildren and 3 great Grandchildren. The family will receive friends tonight at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Chesapeake from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday at Hickory UMC at 11:00 am with Rev. Thomas Mercer officiating. In lieu flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Great Bridge Lions Club or the Hickory UMC Building Fund.
