PORTSMOUTH - Bennie Carlton Wood, 70, of Prospect Parkway, passed away April 16, 2007, in his residence after a long battle with cancer. He was born Sept. 13, 1936, to the late Jesse and Ozelle Wood. "B.C." was a member of West Park Church of Christ. He retired as a senior firefighter for the City of Portsmouth where he received the Firefighter of the Year award twice during his career. He was a member and past master of Masonic Midday Lodge (Portsmouth Lodge No. 100) AF&AM, member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, member and past president of the James Hurst Elementary PTA and a past Portsmouth Fire Department Honor Guard.

Bennie is survived by his loving wife of more than 50 years, Verlie J. Wood; two sons, Phillip A. Wood and wife Rebecca and Ronald K. Wood and wife Cindy, both of Chesapeake; five grandchildren, Kristi, Kourtney, Kyndal, Ryan and Christine; and four great-grandchildren, Austin, Adrianna, Desmond and Jelisha.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in West Park Church of Christ by Mr. Keith Lewis. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, today from 7 to 8 p.m.
