Nancy Stewart Owens Cullifer , 63, of Great Bridge, died peacefully on Feb. 28, 1999, in her home surrounded by her family and friends.

Born to Mary Elizabeth Marshall and George M.W. Owens Jr. on Oct. 24, 1935, Mrs. Cullifer was a native of Portsmouth and a 1953 graduate of Cradock High School. She received her nursing degree from Louise Obici School of Nursing in 1956 and was a 1962 graduate of the Norfolk General Hospital School of Anesthesia. After receiving certification as a C.R.N.A., Mrs. Cullifer began a lifelong career as a nurse anesthetist. She treasured memories of her 25 years at Maryview Hospital. In 1980, she moved to pursue her career in Northern Virginia at Mount Vernon and Alexandria Hospitals. Most recently, she concluded her career at Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mrs. Cullifer is survived by her husband of 36 years, Travis L. Cullifer ; two daughters, Amy Cullifer Skiles and her husband, Mickey, of Suffolk, and Susan Gail Cullifer of Portsmouth; a sister, Patricia Owens Anderton and her husband, Gene Holland; two grandsons, Owen Drew Skiles and Warren Kellum Skiles; seven nieces; three nephews; 19 grand-nieces and -nephews; and many beloved family members and dear friends. Mrs. Cullifer was predeceased by her parents, Mary Elizabeth Marshall and George M.W. Owens Jr., formerly of Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.
