Nelda Garrett-Baldwin

Portsmouth - Nelda Garrett Baldwin, 81, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 16th, 2017 at her home. She was born to the late Edward and Ernestine Garrett in Portsmouth, VA, on December 21st, 1935. She retired from a career teaching in the Chesapeake public school system. She is preceded in death by her husband Howard Eugene Baldwin and great-granddaughter Kacie Gill.

She is survived by her loving sons Michael Burgess (Dana) of Farmington New Mexico; Gary Burgess (Lesley) of Chesapeake; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Nelda, known to her closest family as "Nana" was a smart, strong-willed, witty lady who loved her family. After Howard's death she said that "the light of her life had gone out". However, she continued to enjoy time with her family and friends.

A memorial service, in celebration of her life, will be held at 11am Saturday April 22nd, with light refreshments and reception afterwards at Covenant UMC, 2004 Dock Landing Road, Chesapeake, VA. "Nana" would prefer "bright colors" to be worn to celebrate her life.
