Portsmouth - Ila Faye Flythe, 84, went to be with the Lord on July 21, 2013. Mrs. Flythe was born on June 14, 1929 in Aulander, NC to the late Burgess and Maude Jones. She graduated from Cradock High School, and was a member of the Emblem Club of Portsmouth, where she was selected as woman of the year in 1992; and served in various capacities, including club president in 1991-1992. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lawton Baker, Sr. in 1958 and Lokie Flythe, Sr. in 1999; and two grandchildren, Marla Ann Coleman and James Cliton Flythe.

Faye, as she was known, was a loving friend, wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and was an inspiration to many. She enjoyed a busy and productive life taking care of her family. She and her husband Lokie loved to dance, and she was still able to dance at the age of 80. Faye was an exceptional cook and would often spend hours ensuring that every family member got their favorite food; and was often asked to cater events.

Mrs. Flythe is survived by three children; a daughter, Pat Jennings and husband Steve of Woodstock, VA; two sons, Lawton Baker, Jr. and wife Jamie of Burlington, NC and Lokie Flythe, Jr. and wife Dawn of South Mills, NC; a sister, Shirley Cain of Charlottesville, VA; four grandchildren, Ashley Brinkley and husband Nathan, Lawton Baker III, Lane Baker and Lauren Baker; and one great-granddaughter, Savannah Brinkley.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel. Entombment will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
