Clair I. Vredenburg, 78, a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away Feb. 11, 2004, in a local hospital.

Born in Chanute, Kan., Clair was retired from Capital Equipment Co. of Richmond, Va. He was a 54-year member of Deep Creek United Methodist Church serving on the administrative board, Wesleymen Bible Class, church choir and he was a youth counselor. He was also a 53-year member of the Deep Creek Ruritan Club serving twice as president and had recently received a Life Achievement Award. He was a former member of the Hampton Roads Utility and Heavy Contractors Association and previously served on the YMCA Board. He was a former member of the Commodore Chorus, served on the Board of Camp Civitan. He served 10 years as a commissioner for the Deep Creek Mosquito Control. He was a part-time farmer, a member of the Farm Bureau and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Clair is survived by his wife, Helen Hessel Vredenburg; two sons, Brian F. Vredenburg and wife Charlotte of Chesapeake and S. Eric Vredenburg and wife Patricia of Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren, Rachel, Clark, Luke and Jon.

Clair was a good neighbor, friend to all and will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel. Burial will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Deep Creek Ruritan Club Scholarship Fund or to the Food Panty at Deep Creek United Methodist Church.
