Portsmouth - Marion Barnes Whitehead, better known as "Mimi", 87, passed away January 26, 2015. She was the only child of the late Ebert W. Barnes and Hannah B. Barnes. A native of Portsmouth, VA, she was the widow of Stephen Louis Whitehead, Jr. They were married 55 years at his passing eleven years ago. She was an Episcopalian by faith and was a former member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
She was a graduate of Cradock High School, class of '44 and also Madison College. She worked for the Virginian Railway and after marriage and children, she was a substitute teacher with the Portsmouth Public Schools. But she will be remembered for being a housewife and Mimi, to her grandchildren and any child that happened to visit there. She was active in the PTA, Scouts and the Westhaven Garden Club.
Survivors include sons, Stephen A. Whitehead of Portsmouth, Carl W. Whitehead and wife Phyllis of Stuart, Va. and daughter Libbie R. Light of Portsmouth. Her greatest joy, her extended family included 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, with one more due this week, and 1 great great granddaughter. This made for 5 generations alive, for the past three years.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, at 1 PM in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 7 to 8 PM.
