PORTSMOUTH - Floyd Preston Light Jr., 88, passed away Oct. 7, 2007,
in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. A native of Portsmouth, he
was a 1938 graduate of Cradock High School. He served in the
Merchant Marine in World War II. He retired from Norfolk Naval
Shipyard as a diver and shop 72 rigger foreman after 35 years. He
was a member of Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge No. 178 and the
Portsmouth Moose Lodge No. 898. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed
his second home in Nags Head, N.C., that he shared with many friends
and family.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Mildred; his
three children, Tom Light and wife Linda of Fredericksburg, Rick
Light and wife Libbie of South Mills, N.C., and Dottie Joe Kelly and
husband Patrick of Portsmouth; a brother, Gilbert Light of
Chesapeake; seven grandchildren, Ricky Light, Mary Beth Nienaber,
Sherry Breen, Jennifer Kennedy, Jessica Kelly, Dylan Kelly and
Stacey Light; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral with Masonic rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in
Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Tom
Potter. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family
will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 8:30
p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart
Association or a charity of the sender's choice.
The family would like to thank Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center
for all of their special care and kindness. They would also like to
personally thank Dr. Vandana Patel for her compassion and care.
