Salem - Edythe Maureen Taylor Garman was called home with the Lord at age 100 on Sunday, January 13, 2013.

She was born in Elliston, VA on May 26, 1912. Maureen was predeceased by her mother, Cordelia Virginia Murray Taylor and her father, Charles Francis Taylor both of Montgomery County, VA; two brothers, Nyle and Forrest Taylor and a sister, Irete Taylor Lancaster.

Maureen graduated from Salem High School and Radford College where she was educated as a teacher. She first taught school in Montgomery County in two one-room schoolhouses (Funk's Mountain and Reesedale) and the Lafayette and Elliston Schools. After moving to Portsmouth, VA she taught in the Portsmouth City, Norfolk County and the Chesapeake City Public Schools.

Maureen was married to John Sessler Garman, Sr. on April 8, 1939 in Craig County, VA. They moved to Portsmouth in 1941 where her husband went to work for the Federal Government at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. They had two children, a daughter, Rebecca Kay Garman Day (Tony) and a son, John Sessler Garman, Jr. (Susan, deceased).

Her beloved husband, "Sessler", was deceased in December 1968. Maureen has three grandchildren, Diana, Eric (Sarah) and Kristin; two great grandchildren, Amber and Adam; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Giving up her home in Portsmouth in 2002, she moved to Cedar Manor Assisted Living Facility in Chesapeake. In 2009 she moved to the Richfield Retirement Community in Salem at the Joseph C. Thomas Center. Maureen was encouraged by visits from friends and relatives in both facilities, but was especially glad to be "back home" in Salem after many years. At Richfield, she received visits from longtime friends and relatives she had not seen for years.

Maureen celebrated the century mark with her 100th birthday in May 2012 but her health declined in the last few months of the year. The family appreciates the excellent care she received and friends made while a resident at Cedar Manor. A special thank you to the staff and administrators at the Joseph C. Thomas Center at Richfield for their loving support and care throughout her stay, but especially during the few months before her passing.

Graveside services honoring Maureen's life will be Saturday, 11:00 AM at Sherwood Memorial Park, 1250 E. Main Street, Salem with Chaplain Tom Clay of Richfield Retirement Community officiating. The family will receive friends at Lotz Salem Funeral Home, 1330 East Main Street, Salem, Saturday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM.
