Virginia Beach - Joan Pool Joyner, 68, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on February 17, 2015 after a courageous three year battle with cancer. Born on June 25, 1946, she grew up in Portsmouth, VA. Joan is preceded in death by her parents Edward F. Pool Sr. and Mattie G. Pool. She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Powell W. Joyner Jr.; her daughters Kelley J. Reynolds and Erica L. Joyner; son-in-law, Justin A. Reynolds; and grandchildren Ethan P. Reynolds and Taylor G. Reynolds. She is also survived by her sister, Marjorie P. Melchor and brother, Edward (Terry) F. Pool Jr. and their families.

Joan was a graduate of Cradock High School in Portsmouth, VA and attended Old Dominion University earning a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Business Administration in May 1968. She owned and operated, with her husband, the Halifax Hotel on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for 15 years. As an active participant in the community, Joan was a member of the Cavalier Garden Club and served as a past President. She was also a member of the Beacon Circle Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters and Francis Land Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Joan was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, sister and friend. In addition to spending time with her family and friends, she also enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, reading, traveling, taking photographs, playing mahjong, and attending church. Her kindness, thoughtfulness and positive outlook will be deeply missed by all who knew her especially by her husband, daughters and grandchildren who will miss her every day and will continue on with the traditions and values she instilled in them.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Thomas Alberico and his wonderful staff at Virginia Oncology Associates, Heartland Homecare and Hospice and Gloria McCreary, along with her many wonderful friends, for all of their compassion and support. Her family invites all of her friends and loved ones to join them at her memorial service at 1:00 pm on February 27, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church located at 300 36th Street in Virginia Beach.
