Dan Hawley Brockwell, 68, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away July 12, 2013. Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of Alonza P. Brockwell and Mary Ernestine Mundy Brockwell. He is survived by his two sons, Paul and Ross. He was a graduate of Cradock High School in 1963, served in the Virginia National Guard, and was a life member of the Portsmouth Elks Lodge. Dan was co-founder of HBA Architecture and took deserved pride in helping develop it into a successful and award-winning firm and a great place to work. He leaves a legacy of projects and influences that bear witness to his talent and love of architecture. His creativity and his forward-thinking drive were prolific. Dan was honored to serve on a number of boards and commissions for the city and region he loved, including the Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Commission, the Bayfront Advisory Committee, the Beaches and Waterways Commission, the Process Improvement Steering Committee, and the Economic Development Authority. His selfless generosity and regard for others were evidenced in his passion for his civic duties, his commitment to the development of employees and young people, his care for his friends, and his devotion to his sons. He was a member of Virginia Beach Vision and an enthusiastic supporter of the Hampton Roads Foundation, the Military Aviation Museum, and the Virginia Aquarium, among many others. Dan was an avid sailor, patient soccer coach, and incomparable father. Many knew him as a great friend and mentor and all knew him for his forthcoming honesty and his unwavering integrity. His invaluable vision, his unique perspective and his ever-present humor will be inexpressibly missed.
