Portsmouth - Robert Knighton Stampley, 64, passed away Aug. 6, 2007, in Kitty Hawk. "Bob" was born July 27, 1943, in Portsmouth to Andrew and Kate Stampley.

Bob excelled in academics, earning a degree with honors in nuclear engineering from North Carolina State University where he ran cross country track and served as Lambda Chi Alpha’s vice president. As a proud NC State graduate, Bob later served on an alumni association involved in campus growth and development. After college, Bob earned an MBA from Bernard M. Baruch in New York City where he taught classes in economics. He also attended the Warton School of Business. An accomplished nuclear engineer, Bob began his career with Ebasco in New York City and retired as a senior vice president at Raytheon in Augusta, Ga. He later worked with Foster Wheeler in Washington. Bob had a passion for archeology, Native American artifacts, gardening and his beloved family who will miss him dearly. He also had a deep love of the North Carolina mountains and the Outer Banks, dividing his retirement years between these two special places.

Bob was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother; brother, Andrew Junior of Greensboro, N.C.; daughters, Meredith (Howard) of Kennesaw, Ga. and Melissa (Gage) of Los Angeles. Bob was blessed with three grandchildren, Emerson, William and Carson (Howard).

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral. Condolences may be made at www.lovingfuneralhome.com.
