CHESAPEAKE - Richard Eugene Jernigan, 77, of the 4200 block of Raleigh Road, was received into heaven on Monday, Aug. 15, 2011 with his wife of 56 years by his side. Born in Norfolk, Richard graduated from Cradock High School and attended Virginia Tech. He served in the U.S. Army before retiring from Unisys Corp. after 35 years of service. He then worked for VDOT. Richard was a Baptist. Richard loved helping family and friends and was always there for them. There wasn't anything he could not do once he decided to do it. He loved God, his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family including nieces, nephews and cousins. Survivors include his wife, Julia Cahoon Jernigan; three children, David M. Jernigan and wife Mary of Chesapeake, Mark R. Jernigan and wife Trudy of Ohio, and Deborah Jernigan Hoskin and husband Michael of Kaneohe, Hawaii; a sister, Mary Ann Proctor and husband Harold of DeBary, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Amanda, Andrew, Aaron and Allison Jernigan, Michelle Hoskin and Sharla Avery Hoskin Ellison and her husband Daniel. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Joseph Fry. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
