A Matthews man was killed and seven others were injured Sunday morning when a van failed to obey a stop sign on a rural Union County road, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

Robert Burton Donaldson , 66, of Fitzpatrick Lane, died in the collision with the van, authorities said. His wife, Ann Murphy Donaldson , was at Carolinas Medical Center late Sunday in critical condition.

Six Union County residents riding in other cars sustained less-serious injuries.

Frances D. Marshall, a Monroe resident who drove the van, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

The Highway Patrol said Marshall was traveling south on Old Pageland-Monroe Road about 11:30 a.m. when she failed to stop at a stop sign and blinking red light. Her van was struck by two vehicles traveling on White Store Road.

Marshall said she stopped at the intersection and saw no cars approaching, said Highway Patrol Trooper M.A. Marshburn. ``That's inconsistent with what we're hearing,'' Marshburn said.
