Essie Bernadine Waddell, 64, of the 100 block of Heath Lane, died Feb. 10, 1999, in a Portsmouth hospital.

A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., she was a retired clerk from Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a member of the Beazley Foundation of Portsmouth.

Survivors include her husband, James M. Waddell; a daughter, Pamela W. Updyke of Richmond; a son, Jonathan E. Waddell of Portsmouth; a sister, Patricia Goslee of Poquoson, Va.; a brother, Oliver W. Hawkins of Chesapeake; and two grandchildren, Zachary W. Borill of Richmond and Sarah C. Mines of Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ambassador Scholarship Fund of Portsmouth.
