VIRGINIA BEACH— On Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, George Richard ‘‘Dick’’ Caffee, 68, loving husband of Patti Fowler Caffee and son of the late Irma Christine Chesson and George Benson Caffee, passed away at home with family after a long and courageous battle with a terminal illness.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Lee Moncrief. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and fondly remembered for his kindness, his generosity and his sense of humor.

Dick Caffee, as he was known to his friends and family, was a native of Portsmouth, having been born at the no longer existing Parrish Memorial Hospital in 1935. He attended Cradock High School. He began a career at Caffee’s Bakery, the family business, then moved on to establish himself in the local community as a respected musician. In 1994 he retired, ending a long career in the music business which he loved.

Besides his loving wife of 46 years, survivors include two sons, Richard L. Caffee and his wife, Cheryl, and Stuart R. (Randy) Caffee and his wife, Renee, all of Chesapeake; a daughter, Christi Ann Caffee of Virginia Beach; a brother, Donald B. Caffee and his wife, Mary Jean, of Sanford, N.C.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Davis and her husband, Michael, of Chesapeake, Rachael Phelps of Virginia Beach, and Jonathan Caffee of Chesapeake; three greatgrandchildren, Colby, Karlie and Kelsey Davis of Chesapeake; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth by the Rev. Frank Carter of First Friends Church. The family will receive visitors at their residence following the burial.
