PORTSMOUTH - Mr. Joy Nicholson Barnes, 80, formerly of the 400 block of Mohican Drive, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Oct. 29, 2011. He was affectionately known as "the Candy Man." A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., he was the widower of Ardeen M. Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a retired contractor and also retired after 17 ½ years with the Norfolk and Portsmouth Beltline as a yard master clerk. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and an Army veteran. Survivors include one daughter, Joy C. Erickson and husband Howard of Lynchburg; two sons, William Mark Barnes and wife Tanya and Gary S. Barnes and wife Juanita, all of Portsmouth; one sister, Bertie Lou Joyner of Corapeake, N.C.; five grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial with military honors will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
