Eugene Clifton (Gene) Cooper, 78, of Vinton, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2007. He was born September 7, 1929 the son of the late Otis James Cooper and Ola Bradley Cooper. He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard E. Cooper. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He retired after 35 years of service from AT&T Telephone Company. He worked many years and was still employed at Lotz Funeral Home. He was a long time member of Vinton Baptist Church. He was active in the Vinton Lions Club and the Vinton Jaycees. Surviving are his wife, Sara Cooper of Vinton; stepson, Timothy Chewning and his wife, Teresa, of Vinton; daughter, Christie Cooper of Vinton; grandchildren, Jonathan Cooper, Hannah Chewning, and Hallie Chewning; brothers, James W. Cooper of Salem, Curtis A. Cooper and wife, Norma, of Vinton; sisters, Catherine C. Silver of Roanoke and Helen C. Thomason of Rocky Mount; sisters-in-law, Nellie B. Cooper of Roanoke and Phyliss S. Mitchell and husband, Robert (Bob) of Blue Ridge; brother-in-law, Robert (Bob) Saunders of Goodview; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at Lotz Vinton Chapel with Dr. Rev. William (Bill) Booth officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
