PORTSMOUTH - John Marshall Carter Sr., 80, passed away Saturday Oct. 23, 2010. He was a native of Bertrane, Va., and was a retired lawyer and CPA in Portsmouth. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law School and its McEntire School of Commerce. He was a member of the Beech Grove United Methodist Church, the Ambassadors Club, Portsmouth Bar Association, past treasurer for over 25 years and past president of the Cradock Lions Club and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Joyce Smith Carter; one daughter, Karen Swan and her husband Capt. Kenneth Swan of Gales Ferry, Conn.; two sons, John M. "Chip" Carter Jr. and his wife Terri of Richmond, Kevin Carter and his wife Amy of Elon, N.C.; one brother, Graham Carter and his wife Martha of Portsmouth; and 11 grandchildren, Wesley, Brandon, Masha, Austin, Kendal, Maggie, Quinton Swan, Kelsey, Grace, Jay and Matthew Carter. A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Meadowbrook Memorial Mausoleum.
