Vallie Earle Buhls Trent, 86, died Jan. 16, 2004, in her home at Chesapeake Beach. She was born Oct. 30, 1917, in Suffolk, Va. to the late Pete and Vallie Buhls.

She earned her degree from Kings Daughters Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. She was a captain in the Army Nurse Corps in World War II in Hawaii and the Philippines.

After the war, she earned her BS in nursing education from the University of Virginia. She later taught social studies for 30 years in the Portsmouth school system at Cradock High School and Alf Mapp Jr. High. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority, TOPS VA 500, and a charter member of Cradock Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Anne Pitt and Leslie Allman of Virginia Beach and two grandchildren, Bailey and Katie Allman, also of Virginia Beach; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Buhls of Bristol, Tenn.; two nephews, Peter and Eric Buhls also of Bristol; and a niece, Elaine Buhls Christoph of Metarie, La. She was preceded in death by a brother, James "Pete" Buhls of Bristol, Tenn.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church, 2217 W. Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or The Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
